A daughter is a little girl who grows up to be a friend. ~Author Unknown
After a really big swoop on the Samantha roller coaster, she kindly apologizes and shares her feelings.
“I’m not sure I want to be adopted,” she says. “Some things need to change around here.”
It turned out to be one of those great conversations, diluting her worked up, pre-teen ideas of being hated by the world. She was teachable, I was instruct-able in the ways of learning to be a family, though not a perfect one.
It is in those moments that she and I are humbled by love and a pure hope for the kind of mother-daughter relationship we both desire. A moment when we’re not aunt or niece, mother or daughter, but friends connected by the Spirit.
And, graciously, hope lives on.
